2018: Current Events


AIM: SWBAT identify the five major parts of a news story within articles from current newspapers, using copies of the Los Angeles Times, graphic organizers, and presentations with at least 80% accuracy.

Today you will be practicing current event skills using electronic copies of the Los Angeles Times newspaper.

Task 1:  Go to the Los Angeles Times website.  Mr. Perry will give you the login and password information.  You will choose two articles:
  1. Any article from the front, nation, or world sections.
  2. Any article of your choosing, from any section.
Once you have chosen your articles, complete the "Current Events Article Summary" you were given.

Task 2:  Complete this question review of the articles you read today.

Task 3:  Prepare to share the information from your articles with your teammates.

2018: People of the West: The Nez Percé


AIM: SWBAT identify the history of the Nez PercĂ©, and describe how their lives in the west were affected by the arrival of settlers by completing selected activities and the Exit Slip with at least 80% accuracy.

Today you will begin learning about another of the groups of people who inhabited the new land in the west.  You will do this taking a few notes, and then doing a couple of fun summary activities below.

Task 1: Follow along with Mr. Perry's presentation and complete your notes.  If you have trouble seeing, you can view the presentation here.

Task 2: When he surrendered to U.S. soldiers, Chief Joseph wrote a letter that become a remarkable piece of American History.  You will read the short letter, and answer a few questions about it.


Task 3 (Partner Work): You will work with a partner to create an online Powerpoint presentation about the people of the Western Frontier.  You and you partner will use the Google Docs Template to create your presentation.  In the presentation, click "File" then "Make a Copy," then you can begin to make changes to the presentation.  

You may add pictures, video, or anything else about the groups that you feel will help the understanding of your teammates, and that they will find interesting.  

When you have completed your presentation, share it with Mr. Perry, and wait for your turn to present.


Task 4: You can either complete your assignment from yesterday, or begin working on your homework.

AIM: SWBAT identify the motives for Chinese Immigrants to move west, and describe the major elements of their lives in the west by completing selected activities and the Exit Slip with at least 80% accuracy.

Today you will begin learning about another of the groups of people who inhabited the new land in the west.  You will do this taking a few notes, and then doing a couple of fun summary activities below.

Task 3: TOday you have three choices on how you want to summarize the trials and tribulations of Chinese Immigrants in the U.S.:
  1. You can create a comic strip on what you learned today about Chinese Immigrants using Strip Generator.
  2. You can create a children's storybook about Chinese Immigrants using StoryJumper.
  3. You can create a short animated explanation what you learned today using GoAnimate.


Task 4: You can either complete your assignment from yesterday, or begin working on your homework.

Task 3: You will be working to make an animated cartoon explaining the origins of the Mormons.  In your cartoon, you wil have two characters discussing the beginnings, trials, and settlement of the Mormon people.  Go to GoAnimate, and follow Mr. Perry's instructions for signing up, and creating your cartoon.

Task 4: You can begin working on your homework.

The Persian Empire and the Ionian Revolt

AIM: SWBAT describe the beginnings of the Persian empire and the Greek-Persian Wars by completing selected activities and the Exit Slip with at least 80% accuracy.

Today we will begin learning about the Greek-Persian wars, starting with the Ionian revolt.  Today we will also be taking a quick quiz on Athens and Sparta.

Task 1: You will have the next 10 minutes to complete your quiz on Athens and Sparta.  Talking or any other communication during this quiz will result in a score of zero.

Task 2: You will be reading about the beginning of the Greek-Persian wars, the Ionian Revolt.  Take notes in your organizer as you read.

Task 3:  Complete this review of your reading.

Task 4: Choose Strip GeneratorGoAnimate, or StoryJumper to create a summary of the events of the Ionian Revolt.
